Cornwall food & drink restaurants are part of restaurant chains or franchise operations, and standardized food stuffs are shipped to each restaurant from central locations. There are also simpler fast-food outlets, such as stands or kiosks, which may or may to provide shelter or chairs for customers
Because the capital requirements to start a fast-food restaurant are relatively small, particularly in areas with non-existent or poorly enforced health codes, small individually-owned fast-food restaurants have become common throughout the world.
As further proof of Cornwall’s status as the nation’s premier holiday destination, it has come out tops in the latest hotlist and now counts ‘Favourite British holiday location’ in the Countryfile Magazine Awards 2012 among its enviable titles.
Now in their second year, the Countryfile Magazine Awards 2012 celebrate the UK’s countryside and people and in announcing the winners, the magazine described Cornwall’s success in the new category for 2012, as ‘no great surprise’. Cornwall was also praised as being ‘the land of magical coves, enchanting fishing villages, sandy beaches and many myths and legends’.
The impressive award title was voted for by readers of the monthly magazine and by members of the public from a list of 10 popular locations suggested by Lonely Planet Traveller Magazine. Cornwall pushed the Peak District into second place, while the Lake District took third place.
In a double celebration for Cornwall, the Cornish pasty also saw success in the awards, taking second place in the ‘favourite regional dish’ category. The much loved speciality narrowly missed the top spot to Devon cream teas. We at Cornwall Food & Drink are biased of course and think that a cream tea isn’t perfect without Cornish clotted cream, but we won’t be bearing our neighbouring county over the Tamar any grudges. And as third place went to West Country cider, it just goes to show how popular the food and drink from this part of the country is.
Commenting on the success, Malcolm Bell, Head of VisitCornwall, said, “This is another fantastic achievement and I thank all those that voted for Cornwall and the Cornish pasty. Countryfile Magazine captures all that is great and good about the British countryside so to be recognised by the readership of such a creditable source speaks volumes about the quality of our destination.”
